How Hungary Keeps Russia Close Despite EU’s Pressure | Russia-Ukraine War For all the talking the European Union does in trying to take on Russia, there’s been one outlier throughout – Hungary. Hungary and its leader Viktor Orban have been a thorn in the EU’s side for quite some time now. It is Orban’s bonhomie with Russian President Vladimir Putin that has made the bloc uncomfortable. From opposing the EU’s diktats on democracy to rejecting sanctions, Hungary has boldly opposed the European Union on quite a few occasions. And one of the biggest bones of contention between the two is the biggest investment in Budapest’s history.
