Prime Minister Scott Morrison says Australia remains a leader in the Pacific despite the “constant pressure” coming into the region.
It comes as a leaked document reveals the Solomon Islands will allow Chinese military forces to be stationed on the Pacific nation.
Mr Morrison said the instability in the Solomon Islands will highlight Australia’s responsibility to provide continual support to the Pacific islands.
“We are the single, largest provider of development-assistance in the Pacific,” he told Sky News Australia.
“We have led in the Pacific. But I think, events that you have seen most recently, only highlight the constant pressure, and constant push that is coming into the region.”
