The United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization was formed in 1945 as a specialist branch of the United Nations that would focus on encouraging cooperation between countries in education, the arts, science, and culture. More commonly known as UNESCO, it began the World Heritage Site Program in 1972 whereby it would designate places around the globe as ones that should be protected because of cultural or natural importance. Today, 1,154 have been added to the list, which has proven to be one of the most successful initiatives to have come from the U.N.
