Weeks after Russia launched its “special military operation” against Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the CEO of Italian energy major Eni, Claudio Descalzi embarked on swift official visits to Africa. The goal? To secure gas supplies for Italy. Germany, unable to secure long-term replacement supplies from other countries, has been forced to buy gas at prices which are eight times higher.
